Transforming grief into community action

Rustic Music Notes

The AHJ Foundation honors the legacy of Alissa Henry Johnson by transforming the healing power of music and culturally rooted community spaces into pathways for cancer prevention, early detection, and health equity. We work in partnership with artists, cultural leaders, and healthcare providers to bring prevention education and screening access directly into the environments where families gather, celebrate, and build trust.

Communities disproportionately impacted by cancer often face barriers to traditional healthcare settings, including limited access, mistrust, and cultural disconnects. Prevention messages delivered in clinical environments frequently fail to reach those at highest risk. As a result, preventable cancers, especially cervical and oral cancers, continue to burden underserved neighborhoods.

The Spark

Our Mission

To advance cancer prevention and early detection in underserved Eastern North Carolina communities by integrating culturally responsive health education into music and community cultural spaces. We honor the legacy of Alissa Henry Johnson by meeting families where they gather, partnering with trusted artists and cultural leaders, and expanding access to prevention services through affirming, community‑rooted experiences that strengthen trust, increase knowledge, and reduce disparities.

Our Vision

A future where every community—regardless of zip code, identity, or access barriers—has equitable opportunities to prevent cancer, receive timely screenings, and engage with health information in trusted cultural environments. We envision vibrant music and arts spaces that not only celebrate culture but also serve as sustainable hubs for prevention, connection, and whole‑community well‑being.
